You can actually download the software directly to your phone if you have internet connection on your cell phone. After getting the software, purchase an activation code. If you lose your phone or it gets stolen, once the person who has it removes your sim card from that phone, an sms is sent to a certain cell phone number (which you had provided during the download of the tracking software) giving the number and details of the person using the phone. You can then call the person and tell them that they are using your phone. You can go further and tell them you are keeping track of their movements. This is all to help you get your phone back.
